Abstract:
Components subjected to corrosion in the Oil & Gas sector are frequently manufactured in Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRA) over High Strength Steels. CRA Coating and HSS substrates are high-cost materials.

This research focuses on studying the feasibility of using Laser Direct Energy Deposition (LMD) technology to adjust the Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of a single layer coating, by applying different ratios of 316L and Inconel 625 alloys powders on a 42CrMo4 steel substrate.

Ongoing research is based on the study of the influential metallurgical parameters (chemical composition and microstructure) on PREN according to the Process and Technology (LMD & EHLA) characteristics employed.

The result has a relevant impact in terms of cost competitiveness as it means achieving a PREN comparable to Inconel 625 with a lower cost and chemically adjusted powder mix.
